It can be scary to go in for one procedure and realize there’s a need for another procedure first. Sometimes, it’s necessary for a successful outcome. Dental implants are one of the most effective treatment options for replacing missing teeth. However, for the implant procedure to be successful, the implants need strong foundational support in the jawbone. While you may have only planned to have the dental implant procedure, if your jawbone is thinning or brittle, you’ll likely be recommended a sinus lift before the implant procedure.

At Union City Oral Surgery Group, our oral specialists have handled multiple sinus lifts. We prioritize patient care and ensure that our patients feel supported before, during, and after their procedures. Our goal is patient satisfaction, and we will go the extra mile to ensure our patients achieve their desired results. What Is a Sinus Lift?

A sinus lift, or maxillary sinus floor augmentation, is a dental surgical procedure that aims to strengthen the jawbone in preparation for dental implants. The procedure involves performing a bone graft that reinforces the upper jawbone beneath the sinus cavity. The sinus membrane is gently lifted, creating room for the bone graft. Once the body has integrated the grafted bone material, the upper jaw will be strong enough to support a dental implant.

Why May You Need a Sinus Lift?

A sinus lift may become a treatment option if there is excessive bone loss in the upper jaw where there is a need for a dental implant. After a tooth is extracted or lost, the jawbone around that missing tooth will begin to deteriorate and weaken over time. Patients who have worn dentures or dental bridges for a long time or who have had a missing tooth that has had no restorative treatment may need a sinus lift before proceeding with a dental implant. Otherwise, the jawbone will be too weak to hold the implant securely in place.

Other reasons a patient may need a sinus lift include the following:

  • The maxillary sinus is too close to the jaw: When the maxillary sinus is too close to the upper jaw, there is an increased risk of implant penetration. Sinus lift surgery helps correct this by adding to and strengthening the jawbone to ensure that the implant can be set firmly.
  • Periodontal disease: Patients with periodontal disease may need a sinus lift before a dental implant procedure due to the excessive bone recession in the jaw.
  • Untreated tooth decay: When tooth decay is left untreated, the decay will typically spread to the jawbone, weakening it. This means the bone will be unable to support the implant. A sinus lift helps provide enough reinforcement before the implant is placed to ensure it remains secure.

A sinus lift is a great procedure that paves the way for a successful dental implant procedure, a renewed smile, and improved oral health. Ultimately, the best way to be sure that a sinus lift is required is to have your mouth thoroughly examined by an oral surgeon prior to a dental implant procedure.
