Hair Restoration in Union City, NJ

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is the ultimate non-surgical procedure to address hair loss and hair thinning for both men and women. PRP promotes new follicular development and activates hair growth. The result is a significant increase in hair density and thickness. PRP isn’t just a fad, either. Numerous scientific articles show its efficacy in increasing hair count and thickness and prolonging follicles within the growth phase of the hair cycle.

At Union City Oral Surgery Group, we believe the best strategy for hair loss treatment is multifactorial. Our hair restoration package includes three treatments of PRP injections and includes the option of adding other clinically proven solutions for hair loss, such as oral supplementation and topicals like Rogaine. Regardless of age or gender, addressing the issue of hair loss or thinning as early as possible yields the best results. Let us help you protect, nourish, and support your hair growth.

How Does PRP Therapy for Hair Restoration Work?

Physicians began using PRP therapy to speed up the healing process in damaged joints after an injury or surgery. During that process, a technician draws the patient’s blood and spins it in a centrifuge to separate the plasma and the platelets. Doctors then inject the plasma back into the patient, which helps promote cell growth and wound healing, stimulates collagen production, and repairs blood vessels.

PRP therapy is a three-step process:

  • Blood Draw: In platelet-rich plasma therapy, the first step is to draw a sample of the patient’s blood. Depending on how much hair loss is being treated, they can expect approximately 20ml of their blood to be drawn. This step typically only takes a few minutes.
  • Blood Processing: The processing of their blood will take around 15 minutes. When whole blood is spun in a centrifuge, the plasma and platelets are separated by weight. Once the components separate, the white and red blood cells are safely discarded. The plasma and platelets are then combined and prepared to be injected into the patient’s scalp.
  • Blood Injection: The final step is to inject the platelet-rich plasma into the scalp in the area of the hair loss or thinning. A numbing agent will be applied to the scalp before the injection, as the skin on top of the head is thin.

After researchers found that a high concentration of platelets in plasma cells helps promote hair growth, doctors began using PRP therapy in dermatology. Doctors inject plasma into the scalp where hair loss or thinning has occurred. Typically, the injections are administered monthly for three months, then spread out over three or four months for up to two years. The injection schedule depends on the patient’s genetics, age, hormones, and amount of hair loss.

Who Makes a Good Candidate for PRP Therapy?

Part of what helps PRP therapy be successful for patients is ensuring that they’re good candidates. People who fall into the following categories are often not good candidates for PRP therapy:

  • People with underlying disorders, such as thyroid disease or lupus, aren’t likely to have good results, as these conditions will continue to cause hair loss over time despite the PRP therapy treatment.
  • People on blood thinners will likely not have an effective procedure due to their platelets being unable to work effectively.

PRP therapy works better for patients who’ve experienced recent hair loss. It’s more challenging to activate hair follicles that have been dormant for a long time.

How Does PRP Therapy for Hair Loss Compare with Other Options?

Other treatments for hair loss currently on the market can be problematic for many patients. Currently, there are two FDA-approved medications for treating hair loss called finasteride and minoxidil. These drugs must be taken consistently over time, but results are inconsistent. Each drug has specific side effects that may arise:

  • Minoxidil can cause dryness and itching on the scalp
  • Finasteride can cause sexual dysfunction in men

Another option for addressing hair loss is hair transplantation. However, this treatment requires cuts in the scalp and a long recovery time. It’s a surgical procedure that doctors typically only recommend when a patient has suffered dramatic hair loss. Additionally, hair transplantation is more costly and leaves behind scars. PRP therapy is often the most effective solution for hair loss. In fact, before a hair transplant, the doctor may perform PRP therapy to increase the chances of a more successful procedure.

What Results Should I Expect from PRP Treatment for Hair Loss in Union City?

PRP contains a concentrated mix of cytokines and growth factors that can be activated and injected into the areas where hair loss or thinning is occurring. The injection of the plasma leads to the stimulation of dormant hair follicles and initiates hair regeneration. At a minimum, PRP therapy helps improve hair health, strength, and individual hair diameter, preventing further hair loss. This maintains the current amount of hair and improves the health and quality of a patient’s current hair. PRP therapy often induces new hair growth, but the degree of hair growth varies from person to person.

PRP therapy results for hair loss aren’t immediate. The growth cycle for new hair to grow the follicle takes about three months, which means it’ll be a little bit before a patient can see the difference the therapy is making. Most people begin to notice results between six to twelve months after their first treatment. The best results come from repeated PRP therapy sessions once a month for three months. Generally, people return once or twice a year to maintain results they’re happy with.
